The Uncollectible: A Quick Run-Down of Collecting Failures.

So in the course of Pottermore, Chamber of Secrets continues to be one of the more interesting releases, as it was the one filled with the most additions to the site, with two potions(three if you count both parts of Polyjuice), a new potion book, the requirement of items to access certain things in moments (the hairpin, swelling solution and Polyjuice part 2), multiple mini-games, with gnome flinging becoming rather popular given the stale nature of dueling, and quite a bit of information regarding things that people wanted to know, like the sword of Gryffindor, and of the logic behind the Polyjuice potion's ingredients. But strangest of all was the fact that certain items were "glitched" in their collection, or limited in strange ways.

Going over the glitched list, we have the earmuffs, the Magpies badge and the Needlework. All of these were initially to be released in Chamber of Secrets, with the earmuffs being glitched (or featured) to one collection only, as well as the initial ability to collect the badge and needlework.

Beginning with the first of the glitched items, we have the Earmuffs collected in the mandrake moment. These come in multiple colors and to those unaware, they can only be collected once, and you only get the option to collect one color. However, others have figured how to add multiple earmuffs to their page by opening the moment in multiple pages or tabs, and then collecting near-simultaneously, to ensure they have the full set. This may have been done to prevent users from gifting it or collecting more, similarly to other more "Key" items on pottermore, where the ability to gift the item could be a potential detriment to the user (like the lock pick or the gringotts key). This leads to a potential toss to a herbology feature from back then, though this seems unlikely given the current status of Pottermore.

As for the other two, both were to be found in McGonnagal's offices in Chamber of Secrets, and there is no good reason for the items being missing. Perhaps, just perhaps, they accidentally wanted to avoid McGonnagal supporting the Magpies but this seems like a fairly stupid reason to cut it, given that when we did get access to the item, it was first as a reward for a House Cup, and later as a collectable item in the third book when Hermione uses the time turner. This. Was. Stupid. Usually I may not make much of a fuss, but given the history that badge had, it could have, if they wanted to have it make sense, appear as a collectable item in the fourth book. Furthermore, given it's status as a prize for a house cup, making it available to all shortly after awarding it seemed almost shallow, like Pottermore had just taken an empty sherry bottle from the programmers and called it a trophy. Comparably, the Needlework still has yet to reappear, five books into the series. It may reappear in Half blood prince, if Half blood prince has a moment meeting Slughorn in the Muggle home, though it may just remain another legacy of Pottermore's long lasting commitment to incompetence, and a reminder of things they have yet to "fix" calling them features.

As always, what do you think? Are you disappointed we didn't see more from these items and from Pottermore? And do you still hope that Pottermore will fix the situation regarding the needlework and magpie's removal from Chamber of Secrets and collections?

  1. I am very disappointed that Needlework has not been fixed. I've sent many owls asking for it's return to no avail. Not even a real email, just PM's common boilerplate. I'm more disappointed that PM totally disrespects legit requests. It would seem easy to reinstate Needlework as it remains in Dumbledor's office.

    1. While I do hate to mention this or give information that could promote the harassment of Pottermore's staff.... the usual email as you may have expected is not an actual email, but rather for a service that responds and is outsourced by pottermore. However, it is possible for people to find the Higher ups via Linkedin. I'm still surprised this is the case, but some do have the proper domain for email, and can contact these actual human beings far easier than most of us.
