The Cursed Child

Well this is awkward. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, oh how I almost forgot about you.

Well let me start off with this. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will go over the life of Harry, though what PART of his life seems up to debate.

To run through what are the possibilities, the bluntest aspect is if it is Harry's past, future, or even contemporaneous with the books*. We've heard that there would be a focus on Lilys and James, though interestingly enough, it's still not a prequel, and many are wondering why this isn't a book. But you loyal readers already know that, so instead, here's a few questions, scenarios, and shots in the dark regarding this Cursed Child.

1) Why is this even a play and not a book?
This is something I would think JK Rowling answers in a roundabout way. By saying that a play is the only proper medium, it makes me think that there are aspects that are unable to be replicated any other way. So this means we should focus on the features of a play, namely the Audience and Stage for the answer. Now, I'm *fairly* certain that cursed child will one day come out as a film, I mean, it's nearly impossible for it not to. However, the stage presents the visual medium for the play, and can allow for things that may be difficult to have simply in text, namely a blending of time. This isn't exactly talking of time turners, but rather allowing Harry, James, Lily, and Ginny to share the stage all at once. This would run a parallel between the two that would be far more difficult to show in text and get the same impact. But this isn't enough you say! Well I would argue that it probably would be, time is harder to blur like that in text, as it makes far less sense to have James and Lilys talk intermittently between the conversation with Ginny and Harry, if such a thing were to happen. So from this aspect, I think it's perfectly right to say that the story is NOT a prequel, but rather it's own story, glancing back but remaining in Harry's time after Hogwarts.

2) So when would it take place?
Well going from the above, I'd imagine it takes place all over the place. You would have moments where you were with Lily and James, perhaps one with Snape, or Harry, or Ginny, or Ron and Hermione. There are TONS of things that are possible using the stage, and for all purposes, I think the aspect of time should be thrown out the window like the wibbly wobbly thing it is. So I suppose the answer is both any time and no time, but perhaps whatever the plot demands of it.

3) So who's the cursed child (it's Harry right?)
Well I wouldn't think it's Harry, the cursed child is a bit redundant if we're discussing Harry. Rather, it can apply to a good deal of people I would imagine, with my top pick being Albus Potter. However, personally I do think that it would perhaps be a new individual, or if I dare to hope for something amazing,  it will be a lead up to a new dark wizard, or a potential dark wizard, that Harry takes in to teach, either repeating the flaws of Dumbledore or avoiding them. Really, I do think that the best cursed child will be one that is abused, and one that is close to coming to a darker side.

So what do you think, leave your comments below!

  1. I'm wondering whether the Cursed Child is Teddy Lupin (Remus & Tonks son) - Has Remus passed on his werewolf traits to his son.
